July 25, 2016 Dear ASEB Supporter, You’ve heard it before; we have good news, and we have bad news. The good news is that after years of hard work and investment, ASEB Mission San Jose has opened! This new site will be the culmination of everything we have learned about Memory Care. We’re working hard to get the word out and begin serving the people in the Fremont area. The bad news is that when it rains, it pours, and if one major challenge was not enough, we’ve been given another. ASEB has endured many storms of the bureaucratic kind over the years, but last week we faced a challenge […]
ASEB’s Adult Day Health Care program in Berkeley was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle on November 29. Learning to forget: Letting go of shame around memory loss “Clarissa ‘Rita’ Keil sits on a porch on a sunny fall day, gently closes her eyes and starts to sing. Her voice croons and cracks, carrying her soulful charisma. “’I can see the sun through the falling rain. There never was a problem that could cause me pain.’” Check out the video here “‘The staff here works to bring people out of isolation and into a common space with their peers.’ “’Just because they have dementia doesn’t mean their soul has dementia,’ […]

ASEB held its annual fundraiser “Art from the Heart” on May 9, 2015. Art from the Heart is a celebration of the continued creative spirit of those affected by memory loss, and it is ASEB’s biggest fundraiser of the year. We would like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who attended, those who purchased items, our corporate sponsors, our performers, those who donated auction items, and our fabulous framers! End of life specialist Julie Interrante served as the keynote speaker. Her wisdom and experience were moving and insightful. The Astronauts moved the crowd late into the night. And auctioneer Patrick Walsh kept the crowd on their toes as he […]
Irvin C. Hamilton, August 4, 1935 to May 25, 2015 I did not know Irv until the last year of his life, but in that last year he made a deep impression on my fellow ASEB Board Members, our staff, and me. Irv had a long and successful career in public relations and was a consultant to governments in places as far flung as Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea where he and his wife Patricia Loftus Lee had some scary adventures. When he started attending our early stage meetings in 2014 he bonded rapidly with the group and our staff. In conversation he was unfailingly polite while delighting in joking […]
After 15 years in our A Street location, ASEB Hayward has moved to a new site at 1105 Walpert Street. The new location is a home with lots of spaces rather than a center with one large community space. This will give us the ability to have multiple activities going on simultaneously that are tailored to meet the variety of needs of our participants. The neighborhood is very quiet, except for the turkeys! The finishing touches of the renovation are still being applied, and we expect to open in March. If you’d like to schedule a visit to our new site, please contact our Social Worker at (510) 888-1411.
ASEB’s talk radio program, Life is a Sacred Journey was just given honorable mention for “Best Blog” in PR Daily’s 2014 Nonprofit PR Awards. Life is a Sacred Journey is featured on BlogTalkRadio.com. The program began last fall as a collaboration between the show’s host, ASEB CEO Micheal Pope, and her group of international interns, who serve as producers. The interns–who came from Belgium, Singapore, Zambia, and Turkey–brought marketing expertise to ASEB and spearheaded a rebranding campaign that included social media, radio campaigns, and visual aspects of our centers. Since it’s first episode, the Life is a Sacred Journey has had 10,000 listeners, and was recently awarded a grant from […]
