Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay (ASEB) has a dedicated and creative staff team behind its nationally recognized programs. However, like many non-profits, our resources are often not equal to our needs and the needs of our participants.
That is where volunteers help.
Volunteers may choose to be a part of one of our day care programs, working directly with participants, they may choose to help with administrative work, or they may choose to help with site maintenance. Whichever choice you make is of equal value to ASEB. Every aspect of volunteering is important and contributes to the larger goal.
In Berkeley, our proximity to the U.C. campus has brought a wide range of volunteers, including those trained in health care and aging, but also from campus groups who simply want to make a difference. But volunteers are needed at all of our sites.
The relationship between ASEB and our volunteers is a win-win situation. Volunteering is a wonderful chance to give to the community and the learning opportunities are endless. Most of all, it’s fun! ASEB is pleased to have such great volunteers who enhance our programs everyday.
Day Program
Our centers in Berkeley, Oakland, and Hayward have enjoyed the strong support of many volunteers over the years. In the day center activity room, volunteers help in a variety of ways; by providing one-on-one attention to participants, assisting or leading activities, or preparing materials for art projects.
Volunteers may have some experience, or be training to go into the field of aging or health care. But everyone has something to offer. Individuals with musical skills are always appreciated. Musicians with guitars, accordions and even the Berkeley Jazz Band have played for our participants--the love of music, it seems, is something that is not so easily forgotten! Of course, just spending time with our participants provides everyone with a rich experience
The only requirement for our volunteers in our day program, other than a willingness to make a difference in the lives of those affected by dementia, is to pass a TB test, which can be easily administered at either center.
Administrative Help
ASEB also benefits greatly from those who volunteer time to give general office suport. When there is a project in the administrative office at the Goetsch Center in Berkeley, such as sending out over three thousand pieces of fundraising letters, ASEB calls on special volunteers who can help with the task.
Site Maintenance
Help with maintaing one of our sites is always welcome. Over the years, volunteers have helped with everything from painting the inside and outside of our buildings, building decks or planter boxes, gardening, or any other kind of labor--skilled or unskilled.
